Artist Residency in the U.S.

Penland School of Craft

Penland, North Carolina
Penland School of Craft is an international center for craft education dedicated to helping people live creative lives.

Overview Penland School of Craft has four residency programs. The three-year Resident Artist Program provides low-cost studios and housing for seven or eight full-time artists who are at transitional points in their careers. The two-year Core Fellowship provides housing, studio space, and workshop access for nine emerging artists who work part-time for the school along with participating in workshops and developing their own work. The Winter Residency makes one to six weeks of studio access and housing available in January and February.

The program welcomes self-motivated, focused individuals working in traditional and nontraditional studio crafts. The primary basis for selection is the strength and quality of the applicants’ work. Residents must also have a clear objective for the time of their residency and be willing to live and work as part of a close-knit community.

A successful residency depends in part on expectations consistent with what Penland has to offer. For this reason, most resident artists have previously spent time at Penland as students, studio assistants, studio coordinators, visiting artists, or instructors. Applicants with no prior connection to the school are strongly encouraged
