“Incomplete” ONLINE Series

by Ryuichi Sakamoto+12 musicians

“In these times when things are not ‘normal,’ I wanted to document the sensations I’ve been feeling. I invited a few of my musician friends to do this with me. I wanted to share the results with you all.”
—— Ryuichi Sakamoto

“The videos, which exhibit minimal movement, all feature the same moon filmed on one day, joining the pan-geographic landscapes together into a suspended landscape film, dampening the viewer’s sense of time, similar to how isolation has affected all of our temporalities during this pandemic.”

—— Zakkubalan

Beijing Contemporary Art Foundation (BCAF) is honored to present, “Incomplete”, with the international music master Ryuichi Sakamoto. Incomplete is a multi-media music series convinced during the global pandemic by Ryuichi Sakamoto and 12 musicians from around the world.

11 independent videos were produced for the series with original music and video art. Ryuichi Sakamoto made each video with one or two musician friends, and Zakkubalan, Sakamoto Ryuichi’s long time video collaborator. Sakamoto spoke about being interested in discovering the collaborators’ sensitivity towards sound rather than simply making music with them. Sakamoto wanted to collaborate with musicians from different parts of the world who have different cultural backgrounds.
The productions are now available on Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Youtube Channel or Sina Weibo (ID: 坂本龙一_RyuichiSakamoto ; #坂本龙一incomplete系列#)

Sakamoto and BCAF

February 2019, Beijing Contemporary Art Foundation supported young Guqin musician Wu Na and Guzheng musician Chang Jing’s Luna New Year concert, “Sound and View” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. Mr. Ryuichi Sakamoto came to the performance site and expressed his appreciation for the performance, thus agreeing on a long-term cooperation in the future.

December 2019, Beijing Contemporary Art Foundation honorably supported the premiere and screenings of Mr. Sakamoto's documentary "Sakamoto Ryuichi: Coda" at Nationwide Alliance of Arthouse Cinemas.

February 2020, BCAF invited Ryuichi Sakamoto to participate in “Ma Ma Pa Pa Festival · 2020 Love Edition” online event. At home in New York, he specially recorded a performance video "Aqua" (a famous chapter of Sakamoto's music album "BTTB") for children in China during the epidemic, bringing deep support and healing power to children from families in distress.

Supported by Meet & Listen Festival de Cannes, “the latest installment of the audiovisual series ‘incomplete’ by Ryuichi Sakamoto features a collaboration with America’s most renowned and daring creative pioneers - Laurie Anderson, American guitarist, singer, record producer and experimental composer - Arto Lindsay, and NYC artist collective Zakkubalan.”
