In an era where global design is increasingly shaped by sustainability and long-term thinking, design is no longer confined to questions of function and form. Instead, it is becoming a critical tool for responding to social issues and imagining future ways of living.

How can designers create clarity within complexity?
How can meaningful order be established amid overlapping cultural contexts?
These have become some of the defining challenges facing contemporary design today.

On May 7, 2026, the Global Youth Design Challenge (GYDC) was officially launched in Hong Kong. The initiative is jointly presented by the Eastern Heritage Art Fund, established by the Beijing Contemporary Art Foundation (BCAF) and Pechoin, together with the Rams Foundation in Germany. The competition is now officially open for global submissions.

Inspired by the design philosophy of legendary German industrial designer Dieter Rams, this year’s annual theme is:
LESS, BUT BETTER

The challenge aims to support the next generation of young designers worldwide, encourage dialogue and integration between Eastern and Western aesthetics, and explore how design can move beyond conceptual expression into meaningful social transformation.

Jury & Evaluation

The competition will invite academic advisors and professors from leading art and design institutions to participate in the preliminary review process.

For the final jury stage, designers and industry practitioners from both creative and industrial fields will jointly evaluate shortlisted works from the perspective of real-world application and future scalability.

Rather than focusing solely on aesthetics, the competition seeks to examine design through multiple dimensions including systemic innovation, professional expression, sustainability, and industrial transformation.

In addition to monetary prizes and honorary awards, selected projects may receive further support through:

· Prototype development and production assistance

· Industry resource matchmaking

· Thematic exhibitions and public showcases

· International media and communication opportunities

Through these extended programs, the challenge hopes to help outstanding ideas evolve from concept into real-world applications while providing long-term visibility and development opportunities for emerging designers.
